Transform Your Practice

"It is amazing what can come from truly listening to yourself."

I followed a very traditional route and worked in primary care for almost 16 years.

Somewhere after about 12 years of working in primary care, I noticed I was telling myself and others that life was “fine”. There seemed to be this routine to life that was helpful in many ways yet something did not feel complete, a feeling of wow – this life is it? In 2016 I learned about Culinary Medicine at a conference and actually cried during the keynote speaker. There was this awakening in me of a passion and uniting of my love of cooking and food and my career in medicine.

"Earning the distinction of Certified Culinary Medicine Specialist (CCMS) in 2015 was a career highlight."

I have become a more effective nutrition and culinary educator, not only in the classroom but also in the professional sector.   I have been invited to speak about culinary medicine at many local, state, and national professional meetings.

My passion and zeal for communicating how food truly can be medicine has impacted the professional careers of many of my dietetics students as well, as at least three former students are also CCMS and work directly with culinary medicine.

"Just telling them what to do would not suffice."

I needed to TEACH them how to effect change in their health.

Healthy lifestyles comprise many aspects of everyday living, be it activity, sleep, stress management among others; however, what was most impactful in my patients were the results of healthier food choices. Culinary Medicine blends the education of patients about healthier food along with direct instruction on how to apply that knowledge in everyday life.

I’ve been working with my colleagues and team at Duly Health and Care to implement our Culinary Medicine patient program using a group medical visit format. It is based at a retail teaching kitchen, utilizing their chef and support team for food procurement, storage, and preparation.

"We must adjust the ways we approach patient encounters."

Like many of my PA and physician colleagues, I found minimal content in my graduate, PA program surrounding food and nutrition. When it came time to answer questions posed by my patients, I wanted more information to provide complete answers and guide them properly. I took it upon myself to study the grocery store, self-educate about ingredients, and seek additional opportunities to learn and educate myself.

Address Your Burnout

Address Your Burnout

Healthcare professionals are passionate about patient care quality, improving the patient experience and patient outcomes.  Quality improvement in healthcare and many of the efforts put undue burden on frontline nurses, physicians, pharmacists and dietitians.

The burnout in healthcare workers including physician burnout, nurse stress and dietitian dissatisfaction is a direct result of those pressures leading to a desire for the best career change for nurses, physicians, dietitians and other healthcare professionals.

Programs like the Certified Culinary Medicine Program can help address healthcare burnout and recapture the joy of medicine and patient interactions leading to improved quality of life for both healthcare professionals and their patients.
